Makeup Ditch & Switch: 10 Steps to a Savvy Face (Steps 4 – 7)

How are you doing with this series? Still with me? Let’s talk about steps 4 through 7 of a full Savvy face. In case you missed the first posts, we covered Step 1 in this post two weeks ago  (7 Tips for Enhancing Creativity By Considering Beauty from the Inside Out) and Steps 2 and 3, in this post this morning at 12:00 pm ET. We also shared an overview this morning at 8 am ET that included 8 reasons to make the switch to Savvy Minerals by Young Living makeup.

4 Foundation

Step 4: Foundation

Whether you use it as the base of an elaborate look or on its own for a more natural approach, our mineral foundation has you covered! This long-lasting foundation is made with high-quality, mineral-based ingredients. Its buildable formula can be used for a simple, natural look or for full coverage that blends flawlessly and still diminishes the appearance of imperfections and blemishes. It is also an all-day foundation, so you don’t need to worry about it as you transition between your home, work, and social life. Minerals bind to oil, not water like many commercial make-ups. Your skin produces oil throughout the day and this will actually give your makeup a natural water resistance. Do you have oily skin? Apply a little Foundation powder mid-day when you start to get shiny to help absorb some of the excess oil!

The foundation powders contain NO fillers, synthetics, or parabens, making it a great foundation for sensitive skin. With its long-lasting formula, gentle ingredients, and gorgeous finish, Savvy Minerals Foundation is the only coverage you need stashed in your makeup bag.

Savvy Minerals foundation:

  • Diminishes the appearance of imperfections and blemishes
  • Minimizes pore appearance
  • Brightens complexion
  • Absorbs excess oils
  • Enhances natural beauty
  • Buildable formula for sheer to full coverage
  • Long-lasting, all-day wear
  • Ideal for sensitive skin
  • Made with mineral-based ingredients
  • Vegan friendly, not tested on animals
  • Formulated without talc, bismuth, parabens, phthalates, petrochemicals, or synthetic fragrances

Color Matching Made Easy

Now that you have your tools for success, let’s talk about color matching and how to pick the right foundation shade for your skin! Color matching does not have to be complicated—in fact, we are going to make it super simple!
There are three foundation shade categories: Warm, Cool, and Dark. Each color line features three or four tone options to find your perfect match. Our mineral makeup can easily be combined for a fully customized color in any shade. Don’t be afraid to blend different foundation shades to find your perfect match!
First, you need to identify what the undertone color of your skin is: warm, cool, or dark (just like our foundation shades). Take a look at your wrist or look at yourself in the mirror. If you have the opportunity to sample the foundation colors, find your match by applying a small amount to your jaw. If the color disappears and looks natural on your skin, you’ve found the right foundation color! These are some general questions to help you decide if you are warm or cool.

Warm Undertones

Your skin will have a golden, yellowish, and/or peachy hue. Your skin tans in the sun and doesn’t burn as easily.
  • Like to wear brighter colors
  • Feel better in gold jewelry
  • Have greener veins on the inside of your wrist
  • You can be very fair with warm undertones. Warm No. 1 is light but has golden undertones.
Celebrities with warm undertones: Kate Hudson, Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Aniston
Tip: Warm No. 2 is the most popular foundation color. If you are older, a warm color can help give your skin a youthful glow.

Cool Undertones

Your skin is fair, light, will show hints of pink, and has more of a porcelain look. If you see lots of pink in your knuckles, have blueish, purple veins, and burn easily in the sun, you most likely have cool undertones.

  • Like to wear pastels and purples
  • Feel better in silver jewelry
  • Have blue veins on the inside of your wrists

Celebrities with cool undertones: Anne Hathaway, Adele, Nicole Kidman, Emma Stone

Neutral: If you feel like your skin isn’t clear-cut warm or cool, you may fall into the neutral undertone range. People with neutral undertones can pull off the widest range of colors on their skin. You can wear a cool or a warm foundation color; you decide what you feel and look best in. You may like to wear a cool foundation in the winter and a warm foundation in the summer.

Celebrities with neutral undertones: Sandra Bullock, Kristen Stewart

The Dark foundation color line is neutral—simply pick the shade that is closest to your skin color. Try adding a little Warm 3 or Cool 3 to make your foundation the perfect match for your skin!

Once you have determined whether you have cool or warm undertones, you need to decide the shade from your color line. No. 1 is the lightest, and No. 4 is the darkest.

Some general tips on color matching:

  • If you buy a color and are not getting the coverage you hoped for, chances are you need to go one shade darker. Move from a Warm 1 to a Warm 2, for example. If you wear Cool 1, move to Cool 2. The only exception is if you are wearing Warm 2. In this case, we recommend adding Warm 3 into your Warm 2 instead of jumping straight to Warm 3. There is a big difference in color between these two products.
  • Another common phrase that’s a sign for incorrect color matching is, “I feel like it looks chalky!”. If this resonates with you, chances are you need to move from the cool line into the warm line or vice-versa.

How to Apply Foundation

You know your correct foundation color, you have the misting spray and the foundation brush, but how do you actually apply the foundation? Since Savvy Minerals Foundation is a loose powder, application technique is very important.

First, start by spraying your Savvy Minerals Foundation brush with 2-3 spritzes of the Misting Spray. Gently wipe off any excess moisture, you do not want the brush overly wet, just slightly damp. Lightly tap some foundation out into the foundation lid. Swirl the foundation brush in the lid and tap off any excess powder. Apply to your face in small circular motions, adding more foundation to your brush if necessary.

Some helpful tips:

  • For ‘full’ coverage, apply numerous thin layers of foundation, instead of thicker application with less layers.
  • As a general rule, the more wet your brush is, the more pigment and product it will hold. So, for areas that you would like more coverage, we recommend using the Concealer brush dampened with the Misting Spray, and applying the foundation in a tapping motion, instead of a swiping motion. This works well to cover pimples, areas of redness, and under-eye issues.

5 Contouring

Step 5: Contour

Does contouring intimidate you? Do you think it’s only for makeup artists or celebrities? Maybe you are new to makeup and have no idea what contouring even means! The basics of contouring are simple enough for anyone.
So what is contouring? Contouring is a technique that helps define your natural face shape and can give you a polished look with a few simple strokes. You apply a darker makeup shade to certain areas of your face to accentuate and define your cheekbones and help create definition and dimension.
Young Living’s Savvy Minerals® line has two contour colors—Summer Loved and Crowned All Over. Summer Loved is a darker brown color, and Crowned All Over is lighter and more sheer. Both of these colors have shimmer, so if you prefer not to have shimmer in your makeup, we recommend using one of the colors in the Dark foundation line instead. These colors are matte and can give a more natural look when contouring,
Contouring is easy! To start, identify the natural shadows on your face. Most people have a shadow from the top of their ear to the outer corner of their lips. This particular shadow helps to define your cheeks. It is also very common to have a soft shadow around the top corners of your forehead and down under your jawline. These shadows shape your face. By applying a small amount of contour product on these shadows, you can naturally shape your face and give it depth.
Remember where to apply contour colors by thinking of drawing a “3” and an “E” on respective sides of your face. This is where your contour colors should go. If you feel comfortable, you can also apply a small amount of contour color down each side of your nose. This isn’t necessary, but as you get more confident in your contouring skills, you can gradually adjust your routine.

Bronzer vs Contour

What is the difference between Bronzer and Contour? You can use one the Bronzer colors, Summer Loved or Crowned All Over, as Contour and apply it as we discussed in the last post or you can apply the Bronzers for an easy, sun kissed look. The difference lies in where you apply the colors on your face!

If contouring seems too overwhelming or difficult, try using a Bronzer! Simply apply Summer Loved or Crowned All Over on the apples of your cheeks, the tip of your nose, and across the top of your forehead. This creates a natural sun kissed look and you will look as if you had spent the day out in the sun! We love teaching new makeup users and teenagers this way of applying a bronzer because it is easy, gives a natural radiance, and looks great on everyone!

We like applying Bronzer to accentuate our summer tan and use the contour application on days that we are getting done up!

6 blushStep 6: Blush

Blush is used to mimic the natural color of your skin when it’s flushed. When using foundation, we mask imperfections or any natural coloring in our face. That’s why blush was designed—to help bring natural color back to your face and give you more life! Blush is applied after foundation and contouring.

Young Living has seven different shades of blush, each shown in the graphic. From top to bottom they are:

  • I Do Believe You’re Blushin’ (pink neutral)
  • Passionate (dark burnished rose)
  • Smashing (cool pink)
  • Awestruck (Soft pink shimmer)
  • Captivate (beige pink matte)
  • Serene (soft coral-peach matte)
  • Charisma (bright pink)

In general, picking a blush color depends on your preference. However, there are some tips to finding a color that will best complement your features. To start, look in the mirror when you are naturally flushed. Pay particular attention to the color of your cheeks, then try to match that color with one of the Savvy Minerals Blush swatches

If you still aren’t sure a which blush to purchase, below are a few general guidelines on picking a blush color that complements your skin tone.

Take into consideration your shade:

  • Fair skin individuals (cool 1 or warm 1) look great in pick soft, light hues like I Do Believe You’re Blushin’, or Smashing. Keep in mind, anything brightly colored will look especially vibrant on fair skin.
  • Medium skin individuals (cool 2 or 3 or warm 2 or 3) look great with medium to dark hues like Captivate, Passionate, or Serene.
  • Dark skin individuals (dark color line) look great in dark or bright tones like Charisma or Smashing.
  • Keep in mind, as the seasons change, your blush should change, too! Adjust to lighter colors in the winter when your skin is fairer, and in the Summer months, adjust to a darker more prominent color. You can swap blush for bronzer for a sun kissed look during the summer!

Take into consideration your undertone:

  • For cool-toned individuals we recommend light pink tones for a natural look, and darker pinks for a more dramatic look like Smashing, I Do Believe You’re Blushin’, or Captivate
  • For warm-toned individuals, we recommend peach tones or medium pinks like Serene, Awestruck, or Captivate.

Blush should be applied in a small sweeping motion starting on the apples of your cheeks diagonally upward toward the top of your ear. Do not carry your blush all the way up to your ear! Blush should be contained on your cheeks, right above the contour color you placed in the shadow from your ear to your lip. Accentuate that highpoint (cheekbone) with a little blush!

What’s your favorite blush color?

Step 7: Veil

This one is the easiest of them all! Use Veil to highlight the high points on your face or as the final step to blend your face! Your face is now complete if you don’t like to wear color on your brows, eyes, and lips.

See you in a few hours at 8 pm ET for the final steps, 8 – 10, which include brows, eyes, and lips.
