Fireside Chat with Zoraida Basaldu: Building Bridges of Empowerment

This week, Zoraida Basaldu, CEO of Empowered Fem, and Shell Vera, founder of The Essential Creative, sit down and talk about what it means to be an empowered woman and how important it is to reach back and bring others forward with you. As the only female engineer in her group at a refinery, Zoraida is an engineer in lipstick who is showing girls that you don’t have to be quiet to be beautiful, that you don’t have to be less glam to be more professional, that you don’t have to live by others’ rules to succeed in life.

This year she’s been realizing more than ever how women are playing themselves small daily and is on a mission to ensure females and teen girls no longer do this! Listen in as the ladies talk about how Zoraida has gone from quiet notetaker to Zeyonce, an empowered leader who isn’t afraid to take her power in the world. The talk will share with you what life looks like from a professional standpoint as well as from a maternal standpoint as mothers of daughters. If you’ve been allowing others to speak into your life and tell you what you are limited to, please listen in and grab some nuggets to apply to your life.

While reaching young minds is her primary focus, Zoraida also publishes a blog and hosts the Fab & Fearless speaker series aimed at adult women, offering up opportunities for motivational speakers and professional networking. Zoraida’s Empowered Fem reached its one-year anniversary in March and she says she has big plans for the future.

Zoraida Basaldu – Engineer by Day, Empowered Fem by Night

When she was only 11 years old and in the sixth grade, Zoraida Basaldu remembers hearing a talk on engineering and realizing at that moment that she one day wanted to become a Petroleum Engineer. Fast forward two decades and Zoraida is a process engineer at a refinery in the gulf coast who graduated from Texas A&M Kingsville with a degree in chemical engineering.

With her childhood dream realized, Zoraida became invested in wanting to expose young girls and women to resources and programs that might inspire confidence, self-worth, and knowledge; programs such as the one that had piqued her interest in STEM careers back in sixth grade. Zoraida describes that early experience as being the catalyst that set her on a path to becoming educated and anxious to empower other young ladies to follow their dreams.

With that in mind, Zoraida created Empowered Fem, officially launching on International Women’s Day on March 8, 2019. Through Empowered Fem, Zoraida and her recruits, which happen to be other like-minded, professional women from all fields and backgrounds, host events at local schools to inspire young girls by introducing them to professional guest speakers who excel in fields such as STEM, the arts, medicine, media, government and more.
